Also: please don't take my comment on Japanese Mastadon speakers as a criticism or complaint. I've always wanted to speak / read Japanese, and wish I knew what they were saying here. A translator would be awesome :)
Well, thanks to the massive influx of Japanese speakers, I'm now wondering if there's a real-time translator available for Mastadon :)

INTRO TO FEDERATION:
1. "mastodon" is a piece of software that runs on a server. There's a lot of servers that run it & u can follow ppl on other servers.
2. When u follow someone from another server, your server receives their toots.
3. The federated TL is all public toots that the server receives, ie all of the toots from everyone that ppl on your server follow.
4. ERGO: if u want to see more toots in the fed TL, follow + get other ppl on your server to follow ppl from other servers!
@project1enigma Looks like there was a code update submitted back in January to make gifs only animate when hovered, but it apparently didn't stick. Allow me to remove mine while we wait to see what happens with the development of this platform.
That last twee - err, toot - should read "disable anims", not "disable anime". I certainly wouldn't go that far, not yet :)

Okay, I'm not sure how long that animated gif is going to last in my profile, but it gives me the giggles for now, so I'm sticking with it.
And already testing out a mobile client for this crazy new world, Amaroq. Seems as functional as the web client. I guess I might just keep myself busy with this tonight.
So this is like... a distributed Twitter? You can set up... nodes for your own flavor of content? And every node needs... a separate login? This could be interesting; I guess I'll keep an eye on it and try to make more sense of it.
