Well, crap. So it looks like mastodon.cloud will be closing end of June due to new laws in Japan making online community management a pain in the butt. Expect a new Mastodon address from me shortly...

@tsturm
Sad to hear, and a nuisance for you.

Do you know what changes in Japan have brought about this situation?

@fitheach Quote from a post by the admin:

"Recently, the handling of online defamation has become a hot topic on many mass media as well as social media channels. News Article for Reference: jiji.com/sp/article?k=20200525 In response to these reports, it is expected that lawsuits and disclosure requests will become more publicly known; and government agencies will order stricter enforcement in addition to tightening regulations."

@tsturm
Ahh, the defamation situation getting worse, rather than better. I don't know the situation in Japan, but in the UK it is a law specifically for *very* rich people.

@fitheach Mastodon.cloud was sold to a company more than a year ago, and it seems the owners are afraid of getting drawn into no-win lawsuits. Not unlikely, since Japan is not known for a progressive court system - it's near certain that the judge wouldn't be able to pick a computer out of a line-up of home appliances.

Do a search for:
not the nine o'clock news rowan atkinson judge

@fitheach Well, I've had a second Mastodon account set up a while ago. I guess I will now activate the necessary emergency protocols and deploy my new identity! 😜
