@schlink "If all people were exactly like me, then more free software, more open standards and more open hardware would automatically empower everybody." This is not the case, though.
@schlink Yes, I believe there is often a certain - unacknowledged - degree of elitism in the hacking community. Which is problematic.
"Yes, much of the internet is and should be commercial — but it is important that significant parts of the internet also remain dedicated to the public interest. The current dot org ecosystem is clearly one of these parts" - Mark Surman, executive director of the Mozilla Foundation, on the sale of #DotOrg: https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2019/12/03/questions-about-org/ #SaveDotOrg
@bortzmeyer @dredmorbius It's interesting to note that Verisign (.com, .net) is for profit, and that ISOC allegedly favors this approach (not sure whether it's true what Malthouse is saying here, though): https://twitter.com/jacobmalthouse/status/1200520427128311808
However, that might also be one of the things that makes people suspicious of #fediverse like Mastodon as it's currently is.
If I remember correctly there has been cases of instances shutting down due to various reasons, and users losing social capital they have built there as a result.
I'm sure we can come up with ways to address these risks.
One thing that's kinda fascinating to watch in the birdsite conversations among the latest wave of the masto-curious is the hand-wringing angst over the potential loss of the #socialcapital they've built on Twitter.
This has me thinking that a key tipping point in the victory of the #fediverse might have a fear-driven component, with such folks worrying that staying too long on a sinking ship will mean having to work harder to re-constitute their social capital on the successor platform.

*The new technology that aspires to #DeleteFacebook for good*
"But the backlash has had at least one major beneficiary. That's #Mastodon, a Twitter-like social network that's had a massive spike in sign-ups this week. As the #DeleteFacebook movement has gained steam, people are registering for Mastodon at four times the rate that they normally do, according to Eugen Rochko, the service's creator."
