@schlink "If all people were exactly like me, then more free software, more open standards and more open hardware would automatically empower everybody." This is not the case, though.

@schlink Yes, I believe there is often a certain - unacknowledged - degree of elitism in the hacking community. Which is problematic.

The current dot org ecosystem is clearly one of these parts" - Mark Surman, executive director of the Mozilla Foundation, on the sale of : blog.mozilla.org/blog/2019/12/

@bortzmeyer @dredmorbius Of course, since they are a cooperative (and a member of my employer, Genossenschaftsverband). No, I was referring to ISOC‘s views, as described in the tweet: Is it true that they generally prefer for-profit companies to take care of top level domains?

@bortzmeyer @dredmorbius It's interesting to note that Verisign (.com, .net) is for profit, and that ISOC allegedly favors this approach (not sure whether it's true what Malthouse is saying here, though): twitter.com/jacobmalthouse/sta

@dredmorbius It's also interesting to note that unlike PIR, Denic, the manager of the .de domain, is organized as a . I don't think such a sale would be possible here without the agreement of the majority of members.

Interesting idea.

However, that might also be one of the things that makes people suspicious of #fediverse like Mastodon as it's currently is.

If I remember correctly there has been cases of instances shutting down due to various reasons, and users losing social capital they have built there as a result.

I'm sure we can come up with ways to address these risks.

One thing that's kinda fascinating to watch in the birdsite conversations among the latest wave of the masto-curious is the hand-wringing angst over the potential loss of the #socialcapital they've built on Twitter.

This has me thinking that a key tipping point in the victory of the #fediverse might have a fear-driven component, with such folks worrying that staying too long on a sinking ship will mean having to work harder to re-constitute their social capital on the successor platform.

Damn it, we're in the fucking Washington Post!!!

*The new technology that aspires to #DeleteFacebook for good*

"But the backlash has had at least one major beneficiary. That's #Mastodon, a Twitter-like social network that's had a massive spike in sign-ups this week. As the #DeleteFacebook movement has gained steam, people are registering for Mastodon at four times the rate that they normally do, according to Eugen Rochko, the service's creator."

#Socialcoop - German Co-op Peeps?

@samtoland @dazinism I've talked to my colleagues from our GenoAkademie. They are happy to provide trainings for non-members (including co-ops headquartered outside Germany, of course). I'm going to send you their contact info in a private message!

#Socialcoop - German Co-op Peeps?

@samtoland @dazinism As a member-financed organization which is regulated as an auditor, we are subject to some restrictions. On the other hand, we provide a number of services to third parties as well. Therefore I need to check with my colleagues about this particular case!

#Socialcoop - German Co-op Peeps?

@samtoland @dazinism I can't give you a definitive answer here, but I think it partly depends on the kind of support they seek.

#Socialcoop - German Co-op Peeps?

@samtoland @dazinism Hi, we audit and represent cooperatives according to German law (and European Cooperative Society). What are you asking for specifically?
