#Twitter has recently started inserting other people's "likes" into my timeline, breaking up their reverse-chronological TL. Apparently, there is no way to stop this.

I don't get it. I follow a lot of people on the birdsite, because I want to read their tweets and retweets. My TL is always very busy. I don't need Twitter to provide me with additional random tweets.

Does anybody know why they are doing this?

@stefanieschulte I bet it's some variation of "to increase engagement" :-/ I find it really annoying, too.

@estebanm As I replied to @erdal, I would understand this if they were doing it only for accounts that follow very few people. I follow thousands of accounts, though. There is never a lack of "fresh" tweets in my TL.

Maybe they are trying to collect additional data about user behaviour and are running experiments, basically.

It is something G+ does since a long time and many people find it abhorrent. So why not copy it?

(I believe the idea is that it gives more content to people with a small social circle, which is many. People with many connections suffer more because they get more like/+1 floated posts.)

@oliof I wonder why they are doing this to people who follow thousands of accounts. There are new "liked" tweets in my TL every time I refresh it, even if there are hundreds of new tweets or retweets from the accounts I follow.

@stefanieschulte I use Tweetdeck, and I get the old-fashioned reverse-chronological timeline. Another option is to set up a private list with everyone you follow and use its timeline to read their tweets.
