Experimenting w/a filter on Mastodon that will remove "RT @" from my feed. I appreciate that some folks are cross-posting from Twitter, but I think I'm most interested in conversations that are native here, not amplified from elsewhere.

“When I started working in the civic tech space — and I’ve seen this again and again with our volunteers who have been through similar journeys — I saw that the work that I did helped folks stay in their homes because they were able to access emergency rental assistance or access unemployment insurance easier. It just really changed the game for me.”

I think at the time, what I tried to get across is that there are honestly near-infinite ways to make the world better, safer, and more whole for more people, and you just need to mess around and find one you're good at.

But in hindsight and given Recent Events, I wish I'd been clearer about the other piece of it, which is that *what you do changes who you are*. It can't not.

I am excited that this rocket is finally launching! I am not sure if I can watch this live though (I will be busy during that time).

I think it's glorious that there's now a Mastodon server operated by people who used to work for Twitter (macaw.social). I could have never imagined it when I started in 2016.

I'm still learning, but it would seem that the version of Mastodon on (the instance I'm on at the moment) is several builds old (3.4.6 vs. 4.0.2). Perusing the release list, there've been numerous releases since 3.4.6 came out in February – any way to know when we'll get the latest build? /cc @TheAdmin github.com/mastodon/mastodon/r

The profile notes feature on Mastodon is very useful but also perhaps slightly unclear if you've never used it before.

It works like this:

Go to a person's profile by clicking on their name, look for the "Note" section and then click on "Click to add note", start typing and it saves it automatically. The note is only visible to you.

This is really handy if you interact with lots of people and need to remember (for example) why you follow someone etc.

picking a mastodon server to join is easy -- just think of it like you're allying with one of many families in a war-torn medieval land, each with their own histories, feuds, laws, blood rituals

(I have not heard back yet, but it’s after midnight there, so that’s not overly concerning)

hey, anyone who's interested in government design, the Design Museum has the current issue of Design Museum Magazine, which is all about design in govt, online for free!! (I've got a piece in there interviewing Prof. Lauren Mattioli about designing the courts; @angelquicksey & @apetersen are in it too) designmuseumfoundation.org/iss

Speaking of impressive design decisions on Mastodon, the "Follows and followers" view, which gives you an ability to see when the accounts you follow were last active (among other views), is amazing.

Among other things, it lets me see that >60% of everyone I'm following has been active here in the last 24h. Which is fascinating (and encouraging).

Consistently impressed by design decisions by Mastodon devs. Sure, there’s some usability rough edges compared to the bird site. But on balance the reasons for the general vibe here are clearly intentional decisions, not an accident. 🙏🏻
