In case anyone was wondering how to alienate someone with a mental illness...
Roommate, after hearing about my symptoms: "Wow, you're really messed up, huh?"
Me, uncomfortably: "Haha yeah...Without my meds I feel like a little bit of a bad person sometimes."
Roommate: "A LITTLE? Hahaha"
Wow, both the local and the federated timeline have gotten much more rapid.
Main problem: I can't read any of the languages.
You know, in my early days on the birdsite (10y ago, yigoonie) there was much a similar atmosphere to here โ well, actually more like the busier instances. I was late for an early adopter, user 1M+, but even then it was *social*. Then as it got busier I fought the tide. I unfollowed rapid tweeters. I tried to read every tweet.
Then I let go and just let the noise take over. I heard what I heard and didn't worry about what I missed.
But this reminds me of those old days. That's friggin awesome.

@smt you may want to keep that account as inactive. That instance was the original, which is cool.
Some folks are putting a check in their active instance and Xs on the inactive ones so people can sort between them.
Every online communication should be renamed to tooting.
"Mum tooted you an email."
"I've just tooted a blog."
"Did you get my direct toot?"

it would be extremely difficult to explain to outsiders, which is entirely the point
I tried the tool for finding which of my birb follows are also here, and the results were extremely disappointing (n=1)

For those who dont know, the federated timeline displays all the activity from all the people on other instances who are followed by people on your instance.

It is therefore very good practice to follow as many interesting people from other instances as possible. We are the ropes binding this distributed system together.

INTRO TO FEDERATION:
1. "mastodon" is a piece of software that runs on a server. There's a lot of servers that run it & u can follow ppl on other servers.
2. When u follow someone from another server, your server receives their toots.
3. The federated TL is all public toots that the server receives, ie all of the toots from everyone that ppl on your server follow.
4. ERGO: if u want to see more toots in the fed TL, follow + get other ppl on your server to follow ppl from other servers!
Okay, what's with the pineapples? :pineapple:
Ohh. That's the killer feature I really want. A 30 second-ish post-toot edit option for the inevitable typo.
