The first computer I owned all to myself had a small fraction of the compute power, memory, and storage of the device I'm typing into right now. Even the display had lower resolution. It was worse in any incomperable number of ways in terms of /performance/.

But the one thing it /did/ let me do was liberate it from the clutches of the pre-installed Microsoft piece of shit OS it came with, and try this radical freaky freebie CD-from-a-book Unix clone I'd been hearing about.

a forbidden love, a cross-instance romance.. a scrappy, spirited young lad from .xyz determined to be with an heiress of .social royalty. their mods won't allow it. but they will do anything to be together.

@montypython One or two have the idea of running an "Ambassador bot" which boots popular toots. In theory you could use that to get a feel for some of the people on it. Don't think it's taken off a lot. though :(

@montypython AFAIU that's an OSocial feature but /not/ one of Mastodon itself. @maiyannah or @moonman should know the answer to that.

Good morning, mastodon users ~= mastodonuts?

If Piketty was right, it was WWI and WW2 that ironically allowed capitalism to survive, by destroying capital, leading to reallocation downwards, causing freedom and innovation. But now capital is accumulating again and choking out the grassroots of it's own success (spoiler: It always does this).

I'd really like there to be neither a huge war, a steady-state of grinding rent-seeking, OR a USSR part 2.

The most dangerous kind of defederation is where the users of the instance don't know which instances are blocked. I consider it a power grab of admins into the hearts and minds of the users by controlling who they can see and thus what they can hear.

Reminder: I'm maintaining an "administrivia / faq" thread, linked from my profile, and collecting / linking to sources for Mastodon information.

If you're getting started and are looking for information, it should be a good place to start.

Information is unofficial and subject to change.

What kind of servers are people running on? Wondering how much a Digital Ocean Droplet would cost to run.

I see a lot of doubt directed at Mastodon, partially because it's precursors (Ello, Peach, Etc.) fared so poorly, but I think a defining difference is that it's the first platform in a long time where I'm both interested and *able* to actually build something on. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Is there a way to connect to and browse other timelines too? Would be awesome to explore niche communities.
