Along with the Mastodon drama, over on the birdsite I also saw yet another revival of EverBernie types tearing down anyone who supported Hillary Clinton.
So tired of this bullshit.
@dredmorbius @tsturm @fraying And if a social network can't cope with that, it won't cope with concerted attacks on minority groups, or propaganda, or any one of a million other things that have made FB and Twitter awful. The world is asymmetrical now, and we don't have the tools that we desperately need to deal with that asymmetry.
The thing that pisses me off the most about this Wil Wheaton thing is that there is a bunch of us who were talking about essential community management tools and techniques a fucking decade or more ago, and we were all ignored. And now what we see is that the lessons we all learnt and discussed back then have not just not been learnt by today's admins, but the scale of the problem has been allowed to get out of hand. And now it's very hard to put the genie back in the bottle.
“Which is of course why it is so dangerous to join a mob… any mob, no matter how “noble” the stated purpose may be. The mob is almost surely led by a malignant narcissist. And that narcissist is using you.”
That quote comes to mind for me a lot when thinking about social media these days.
One of the symptoms of depression is not being able to tell the big problems from the little problems.
Wanna do some good? Form a brigade and go after Alex Jones or Mike Cernovich or Richard Spencer. Punch a nazi. They're not hard to find.
Wilw didn't deserve this. No matter how you feel about him, this was unfair. And we should learn from it because it will happen again.
We have to be able to tell the big problems from the little problems.
@wilw I’m so sorry. Please find an instance with a better admin. Mastodon is better with you in it.

Australia's new Assistance and Access law would create new powers that could demand software developers obey secret orders to re-write or add spyware to their work.
We can stop it now—or have the world lose trust in Australian code. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/08/australia-proposed-surveillance-law
