Mastodon, Twitter and publics
Long ago, I wrote about the theory of social sites, with the then-young Twitter as the exemplar. As Mastodon, GnuSocial and other federated sites have caught some attention recently, I thought I'd revisit these theories.

Or you can build a system where someone with a particular need works with others and builds the thing they need, and bends media and communication to their will so they get what they need. That's empowerment to me. That's nothing about us, without us.

I rather like the humble appeal to obviousness in the OStatus spec:
> "The authors recognize that most of this protocol suite was intended to work together in a natural way. They claim no originality or creativity in connecting their use. The authors hope that the obviousness of some parts of this specification are an argument in favor of its use."
People who know free software, is this a common thing?
Scaling out, not scaling up. What might be a natural upper limit on the size of any one Mastodon instance? Enough users to support a single admin or 2-pizza team on micropayments and tips; small enough that the moderation load never gets out of hand?
I'm supporting @TheAdmin on Patreon, and so should you: https://patreon.com/ValentinOuvrard
