I just clicked on Home on the birdsite and 16 new tweets queued up during the time of the pageload. Ugh.

You know, in my early days on the birdsite (10y ago, yigoonie) there was much a similar atmosphere to here β€” well, actually more like the busier instances. I was late for an early adopter, user 1M+, but even then it was *social*. Then as it got busier I fought the tide. I unfollowed rapid tweeters. I tried to read every tweet.

Then I let go and just let the noise take over. I heard what I heard and didn't worry about what I missed.

But this reminds me of those old days. That's friggin awesome.

/me is wondering how long the various Mastodon instances can stay away from discussing the political clusterf**k all around us.

I just went around and did some basic nmap-ing on the most popular Mastodon instances, and there's some seriously sketchy stuff in there. Publicly reachable Postgres servers, tons of open internal HTTP ports, SSH with password login, multiple Mastodon instances that seem to be running on mail server VMs, …

I guess if you're just running a single-user instance for yourself, sure, but those are all 2000+ user instances.

Thinking of moving my primary profile to an instance where I can understand at least 20% of the toots. I love diversity, but argot accessibility is kinda important for communication and sharing. πŸ˜•

Twice now I've blocked pr0n posters without reporting them first. Am I a bad elephant?

Just what I needed was another reason to fear flying.

Would be REALLY NICE if Mastodon worked with Authy for 2FA.

Buckminster Fuller: "The youth of today are absolutely right in recognizing this nonsense of earning a living. We keep inventing jobs because of this false idea that everybody has to be employed at some kind of drudgery because, according to Malthusian Darwinian theory he must justify his right to exist." mastodon.cloud/media/NtPiircD4

Mechanics are working on the plane. 😬

Politics happening on the bird thing

Nazis are melting down. The twitters so weird these days.

Anti Nazi toot

Yeah, Nazi speech may fall under the first amendment, but that doesn't mean you're entitled to community access or book deals or the stage microphone at universities. And it doesn't mean I have to listen to your shit. I have no fucks to give for your tears.

After Twitter killed the public timeline, users' experience became pretty much limited to the language of the filter bubble they live in.

I understand that some of us make no use of other languages in the federated TL, but complaining that people on Mastodon write in their own language is useless.

If you want to have an English-only feed, don't ask for filters in the federated TL – rather, follow people you find interesting and build the TL you like. It's also beneficial to your instance.

Notice how most toots are <140? We've been groomed for snap opinions and shallow thoughts, people! Glib isn't the new black. It's the baseline now.

Hey, folks. Toot something! Don't just follow and lurk. Life is short! And at least in theory, Nazis and trolls are banned. Step out!

Interesting how the same name pop up even in the federated feed. Kind of reduces need to follow. Of course that will change all of a sudden.

A haha toot:

β€œMost girls aren’t into this kind of stuff.” No way, do you have the list? The list of things most girls are into? I’ve been trying to find that thing forever, can you forward it to me? You have my email. Thanks, man, you’re the best.
