mastdon meta question help please

So one of our newest members over at mastodon.publicinterest.town pointed me to the documentation for removing the subdomain part from our account names & lookups but preserving the subdomain for web access.

Does anyone know if this breaks your existing followers if you implement this after the accounts are created???

@krusynth
Yeah, this would probably treat you as a completely new server from the perspective of other instances.

@benjaminhollon I was wondering if that was the case, since the main domain isn't moving, and it's *only* a redirect for meta-searching? Since ActivityPub is push not pull I wondered...

@krusynth No idea, but I expect you’ll run into some sort of issues.

@krusynth I think the only way to pull this off would be to stand it up on a new domain entirely so the old instance can have old accounts forward to the new ones. Every user would have to set that up too. Since user@server is the unique identifier for a user, if it changes they will technically be new accounts on the Fediverse.
