People on here be like “well the German government runs a mastodon instance, I don’t see why the US cant?”
Folks, the German government is smaller than a single US post office. Easy to create 100 accounts. The US has over 75,000 organizational units last I counted.

@MattHodges sorry, which? Do you mean 14028 or something else? I’m not aware of which hurdles you’re referring to.
The position of the government remains to use open source software (M-16-21).

@MattHodges How much time do you have? There are a *lot* of hurdles to standing up a new project in gov, open source or not. https://digitalpolicy.us/ is a good primer.

@krusynth Hah! Didn't intend to give you homework, but thanks for this! Really just thinking out loud that the "USDS just spin it up!" comments I see floating around seem like they miss a significant part of the ask.

@krusynth Well, I’m more asking “are there hurdles, and if so, what are they?” rather than referring to any specific hurdles; and teeing that off with the Executive Order on Improving the Nation’s Cybersecurity.
