self care twitter account that just posts "get off of twitter" every 30 seconds

If you think the only reason to use a self-hosted social network is if you want to circumvent the laws, you're making the same argument as only wanting privacy if you've got something to hide. YouTube ran an algorithm to delete "extremist videos" and accidentally irreversibly deleted a bunch of historical evidence of destruction of Syrian historical sites. Shit like that happens all the time when someone else is in charge.

A lot of the software used by public institutions is proprietary. This means that the public - including you - is financing software that cannot be modified, studied, shared, or improved.

How can we put our trust in public bodies if they don't have full control over the software they are using?

Shouldn't your money be used to develop software that benefits you and other citizens?

If you think it should, join the #publiccode campaign.

The music is absolutely wonderful; beautifully composed and incredibly catchy. The gameplay is super addicting and very challenging. And you can even play using a DDR-style dance mat :D

crypt of the necrodancer is on sale, and the expansion DLC just left early access. You really need to buy this game, it's absolutely amazing in so many different ways: store.steampowered.com/app/247

Ok. I want to get my retro gaming nerd on.

Can anyone tell me the best, least spammy place to easily get ROMs for all the old platforms?

I wanna load up my Shield TV and make my living room a big screen way back machine.

MST3K is a success story of giving new life to forgotten culture and Netflix DRM makes the next such project less possible

A word of warning to anyone upgrading to Mastodon 1.3(.1)!!!

Starting with 1.3(.1) Private posts will federate! But they don't do so securely! Warnings are built in but be aware that if you have followers on GNU Social, Friendica, or postActiv then they will **NOT** know that your post is marked private/followers-only!! And they **will** be able to boost it!! Once they do so, it becomes a public post

This is not opt-in, it just happens post-update

If this worries you, go audit your followers

If you use Chrome, Google can use a network protocol for tracking and ad delivery that can't be seen or blocked by extensions. TL;DR: You really shouldn't use a web browser made by an ad company.

"AdBlock Plus, uBlock Origin, and other extensions cannot block QUIC requests. Recommended best practice is to disable QUIC from the chrome://flags/ URL."

With news of Unroll.me selling user inbox info to Uber, lots of people are repeating "if you're not paying for it, you're the product."

I've said before, and will continue to say, that that is the wrong formulation. Sometimes you pay for it and you're still the product – look at US ISPs. Sometimes you don't pay for it and you're not the product – free software.

The real question is whether a software or service empowers users, which can't be boiled down to whether you paid.

@TheAdmin Did something change server side? adjustable width columns appear to be gone :\

hi guys i'm hoping to write another piece about mastodon, a sort of wrap-up for my experiment a few weeks ago where i tried to replace twitter with masto.

i'd love to to interview a bunch of you guys? looking for old users and new users alike

Got the rider link amiibo today! I wish nintendo didn't have such limited runs of their amiibo though, I want the princess zelda ones (SSB and BotW) but they're at least $30-40 now on ebay and such, which is cost prohibitive. I bet Nintendo didn't make as many of those either which probably contributes to their scarcity 😠

You’d think the self checkout lanes would have more mirrors
