"Most people want to opt-in to what they want to follow, be that a news feed, a celebrity, a friend, or family. Most people do not want to be force-fed a constant stream of manipulated content to catch and keep their attention."
Attention #Fennec #FDroid / #Firefox users: The critical 66.0.4 update is now available via F-Droid to fix the broken add-on support because of an expired certificate. That was incredibly fast for F-Droid standards! Don't forget to revert any unofficial fixes. https://f-droid.org/app/org.mozilla.fennec_fdroid
A doctor at my annual appointment: "Ever since you told me about medical software safety last year, I see articles about how bad things are on a regular basis! I don't know how I managed to be oblivious to this before talking to you." #AlwaysAGoodTimeToTalkAboutSoftwareFreedom
GNU Guix 1.0 is out!
Proud to have been a part of the project since 2013. I haven't been active in awhile, but I have contributed a lot of packages, a Linux container implementation, a build system for programs written in Ruby, importer tools for PyPI and RubyGems, the 'guix environment' and 'guix publish' tools, and probably some small stuff I've forgotten.
I'm not too worried about Librem One in the software forks... I don't suspect it will impact the fediverse or original projects too much, whether or not some decisions end up being misguided. The original branches will survive; it's free software.
But I do think @purism has a good and really critical mission with making libre hardware. There aren't many options that are modern and fairly easily available. It seems like the org is biting off a lot; I hope the hardware work continues.
We have some exciting news! The team at Purism are thrilled to announce the launch of Librem One https://librem.one Private and secure email, chat, social and VPN. No ads! No tracking! No data sharing! Just the best end-to-end encrypted communication and social. Join the revolution today and take back control of your data and life #LibremOne
Mozilla is shutting down their IRC servers and moving to Discord, a proprietary chat service.
Hey Mozilla, aren't we forgetting something here? Our very own "Mozilla Pledge for a Healthy Internet” states:
> Principle 2 The internet is a global public resource that must remain open and accessible.
> Principle 6 The effectiveness of the internet as a public resource depends upon interoperability (protocols, data formats, content), innovation and decentralized participation worldwide.
Here's a reminder that Facebook owns Instagram - they left millions of Instagram passwords unencrypted on internal servers, just like they did with Facebook accounts.
Stay safe, don't re-use passwords!
> Former Mozilla exec: Google has sabotaged Firefox for years.
No surprise there.
Leaving Apple & Google:
- /e/ users now get 5GB accounts for Free
- more than 75 smartphones supported
- and... become a H/e/ro!

So far, the installation is unfortunately about as involved (lots of mucking to get the basic thing to load). Then there were quirks around "authentication failed" (need to pass user/pass as params) and features ("Simple MJPEG" doesn't allow recording and "Network Camera" didn't like same URLs). Then around file formats.

DRM and streaming means you don't own what you pay for, and the content is at the whim of the provider, and you can't rely on it always being there even if it's a large stable corporation.
