"No split infinitives" is one of those weird holdovers from grammarians who believed Latin was some sort of god-language that every other language needed to mimic, even when it made no sense.
"Don't end a sentence in a preposition" is another rule that it's hard to deal with. Or to adhere to. Or to put up with.
I welcome the call to boldly split our infinitives https://economist.com/news/books-and-arts/21741127-boldly-go-where-grammarians-have-feared-tread-ban-split-infinitives
Until today, this instance had been down every time I tried to visit it in the last two weeks (which, to be fair, was about three times)… just bad timing or is this really not a very reliable server?
I am genuinely happy to have learned about the trick where, if you paste a user's URL or a Toot's permalink into your home-instance's "Search" box, it comes up in your home instance window. This lets you more easily remote follow, or retoot, or favourite stuff that you found in another tab on another server. :)
"War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives."

An oldie but a goodie: The Case of the 500-Mile Email:
"We're having a problem sending email out of the department."
"What's the problem?" I asked.
"We can't send mail more than 500 miles," the chairman explained.
I choked on my latte. "Come again?"
"We can't send mail farther than 500 miles from here," he repeated. "A little bit more, actually. Call it 520 miles. But no farther."
Since I did mention #cats, I felt like I owed you all a glimpse of my Gidget ♥
Doing this because I've been thinking of doing a re-#introduction anyway and this seems to serve the same purpose!
Let's play a game, to help some of the newcomers make connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same.
My partner is home from work today, so my #cat is convinced she gets 2x the breakfasts, 2x the morning kibble… 😫
"Stigmatise those who let people die, not those who struggle to live."
This is the best intro to 🐘 I’ve seen yet, addressing technical and cultural factors.

Uuhhhh so I shouldn't have to point this out, but rich people are not an oppressed minority that need to be heard from. Being a rich person is a choice you make to put capital before human beings. Don't @ me. 😘
Checking out #Pinafore as an alternate interface and so far it's very nice indeed! It's still in beta, but if you want to check it out (and haven't already) you can read about it here:

Thought this was a good piece, from Tim Winton, on the contested concept of masculinity.
People seem a little confuse about responsibility to fight oppression.
If there is a system that oppresses and kills people for YOUR benefit, you are morally obligated to oppose it. Even if you yourself did not commit a crime, it is for YOU.
Yes, I'm talking to you, white people, men, cis people, heterosexual people, rich people. We ALL are *morally obligated* to tear apart a system that hurts other people for our benefit.
