I don’t remember where I first found this, but here’s how the #mastadon feeds work 💙

It's been officially confirmed that ex-Twitter employees have started a Mastodon instance called, and a look at their local feed makes it look like it's mostly going to be devoted to those who want to seriously learn programming for "social network-style systems" like Mastodon, Diaspora, front-end frameworks, JS and more.

I miss how dating used to be. You didn't have to use Tinder. You could just acquire a toad to carry around from the swamps. If you wanted to kiss him & turn him into a prince, you could. And if not, you still had a nice toad companion. Simpler times.

A fascinating new report claims that companies like Google and Amazon are losing tens of billions of dollars on their voice assistant devices, despite widespread adoption, because the plan to sell them under cost and then make up the difference in money made from interactions isn't working, because their customers refuse to use the devices for anything that makes these companies money.

Disclosure: I'm 100% pro cryptocurrency when it comes to finding a way for those in developing countries easily and securely spend and receive money. But man, when the head of the FTX bankruptcy restructuring says it was "in control of a small group of inexperienced and unsophisticated individuals," and that eventually "some or all of them were compromised," you're pretty much describing every cryptobro who's ever existed

I've just started learning about the existence of one-person roleplaying games, although I think this can be called interactive fiction as well, because I'm a veteran of both '70s Choose Your Own Adventure books and '90s hyperfiction of the early web, so my mind goes in that direction. Will be trying Ironsworn as my first actual playthrough soon, but I'm already thinking of less genre, more literary ways to approach it. A recent toot by got me thinking about erotic 1pRPGs, for example.

The power plays and back-stabbing began shortly after this photograph was taken.

Matt Mullenweg has reportedly committed to add ActivityPub to Tumblr. This is a huge deal. Exactly what I hoped to see: a growing federation of social platforms, all committing to work with each other. It’s happening.

Seeing some posts talking about fediblocking turning Mastodon into a "filter bubble." No. We absolutely do not need abusive or fascist views to have a high level of intellectual diversity. Full stop. That hate can fester somewhere else.

After 20 years of social media, the experiment has been run. Hateful people are unconvinced by rational argument, so there's no point engaging with them.

This is a rotten, disingenuous, meritless argument, from A to Z.

Fascism is to be defeated, not debated.

I've been active on Goodreads as a book reviewer for almost 20 years now; but I recently discovered a Fediverse alternative called Bookwyrm that uses the same ActivityPub standard as Mastodon, so I'm going to try cross-posting there for a while and see what I think. I do like the idea of all the Goodreads benefits but in an open, decentralized, non-Amazon-owned system!

I am absolutely ❤️’ing the idea behind the #Fediverse and can’t believe the concept is less than 15yrs old.

After feeling completely abandoned by the ideology of connectivity as a expansion of self and curiosity due to the extreme that social media found home in, I am renewed by the idea within federated software.

It also encourages me to help build an add value to it, which feels wonderful and empowering.

Thanks you to all you who’ve built this timeline 🙌

Read my ★★★★★ review of Mary Shelley's long overlooked 1826 "The Last Man," promoted as a (so-so) post-apocalyptic thriller, but actually an autobiographical novel about her youth spent with the Early Romantics like Percy Shelley and Lord Byron, a more complicated portrait of them now that Mary herself was in middle-age. VERY happy with this write-up, so I hope you can give it a look!

There seems to be a lot of misconceptions about how to set up Mastodon.

1. You do not have to sacrifice a duck. Any waterfowl will do.
2. The bit about dancing around naked in a forest glade? While dancing is fun, you may just walk.
3. When the demon appears, you needn’t chant in Latin. It is fluent in all languages.

The rest of the guide is correct.

It's just been announced that the main villain in Indiana Jones 5 is going to be NASA of all groups, in a script that heavily emphasizes that the US space program would've never happened without the US government giving blanket immunity to dozens of former Nazi scientists.
