Today is the 35th anniversary of the Max Headroom signal broadcast intrusion.

1st incident lasted 25s during the sportscast on the 9PM news on WGN-TV; The 2nd, 2hrs later, lasted ~90s on PBS affiliate WTTW during Dr. Who.

Inside a shelter last night, welcomed 22 nice people to lasagna and salad and buttered bread, clean cots, bedding and warmth. Took over a church ... bless those folks. I still feel the sting of discovering that plenty of these real human beings who come *just to survive* the freezing air of the foothills *are employed!*These are Americans--with jobs--who can’t afford a lease on even the simplest room. Too long ago: holding a job meant you could support yourself. #homelessness #IncomeInequality

With the Hoopak from #Dragonlance, a Rogue who grabs proficiency with the Hoopak can use the Great Weapon Fighting fighting style and reroll 1s and 2s on their Sneak Attack dice.

This has a net effect of +0.67 average damage per d6 rolled, modest but very tempting.

Seriously though, fedi was *built* by furries, trans and queer folk, disabled neurodivergent people.

This is *the reason* the culture here is what it is. Why CWs are a thing. Why image descriptions are a thing. Why privacy matters here. Why moderation tools not only exist, but are usable — and used.

If you had joined and asked yourself "wow, how come this place is so chill and kinda… nice?" — that's thanks to all the nice people from communities some people call "weird".

So #KeepFediWeird.

Clearly, there is so much value in the existence of those 4B people, which is not captured by what is quantified by "wealth".

And until we figure out a way to center *that*, rather than whatever wealth Elonius Musk owns, the world is paying attention to the wrong things.

On the other hand, take those 4 billion poorest people. If suddenly all 4 billion of them were to die, what would happen?

Here's what: Global Civilization would collapse.

So here's the question: Given that those 26 people have as much wealth as the 4 billion, but in one case, those owning that wealth die and nothing happens, in the other, civilization collapses -- what is the value which is not represented by what is currently counted as "wealth"?

And why isn't that value counted?

The #RIPTwitter reminds me of an economic problem which bothers me periodically. The problem goes like this.

According to Oxfam, the 26th wealthiest people in the world own as much wealth as the poorest 50% of the world - 4 Billion people.

Now, if those wealthiest 26 were to all suddenly die, what would happen? Almost nothing; their wealth would pass through their wills to those next in line. Very little change would be noticed.

It was supposed to fix it.
Booth was the founder of the Salvation Army, and raised with the implicit idea that once you got individuals saved, serving God, then it would quickly fix society. But it wasn't.
Booth realized that to get out of the pit of circumstances people needed Job training, Banking, Legal Aid, Women's Shelters, or maybe even moving on to new opportunities abroad.
Here, Booth's map from c. 1890 looking at how to help people out of "Darkest England". #Maps #Datavisualization

Welsh photographer Aled Lewis entered this in a UK landscape photography competition, a photo of Tryfan.

It is staggeringly good

There's a new mural on the side of Pizza Villa, and I love it. PAINT ALL THE THINGS!

When following back people here, I’m noticing a lot of people haven’t posted anything yet.

If you can’t think of anything to write just yet, then do consider just reblogging (=retweeting!) good content that you see around. You could start with this post, for example, to encourage more people to start sharing content around here.

BTW, as we get the Bylines publications going on here, that will provide ample good news content for the community. 👍👍
