also, did we ever figure out if there is a way to search for people across instances?
@cm_harlow The federated timeline does just that. Local is your own instance. Home is people you follow AFAIK
@cm_harlow the Big Search seems to work cross-instance to some degree?
@cm_harlow anyway searching for @ruth gets me two entries on diff instances I ain't on.
@cm_harlow tho it might be limited to instances cloud is federated with
@pobocks @cm_harlow je m'excuse I just moved to France/Witches Town because reasons.
@ruth @cm_harlow are the reasons it being a much cooler domain name?
@cm_harlow @ruth I'm actually seriously asking, bc if it's "the local timeline is better" or "queues have been draining faster," I might, but if not, I'mma hold off till the PromisedLibtechMastodon
@pobocks i still hope this can happen. slowly looking into it
@pobocks @cm_harlow yes but also the who-it's-for feels nice (although I mean no mastodon would be a perfect fit for my segmented, federated self.)
@pobocks @cm_harlow oh hallo. I seem to be @ruth but I haven't explored mastodon very much yet!
@cm_harlow They have to already be followed by one person on your instance, or the full username has to typed if not. (including the instance)
@cm_harlow you technically can if you know their username and instance @username@instanceURL
@cm_harlow If you type in their handle, it tends to pull up.
Dunno if that only counts your follows or not tho
@cm_harlow If you search for a username of an account that's federated into your instance, it'll show up even if it isn't on your instance. If you search for the FULL name - username[at]instance - it shows up even if yours hasn't federated with it.
@InspectorCaracal thank you!
@cm_harlow@mastodon.cloud Not really, unless you know what their username and/or instance they are on. I guess for now, just Show more
@cm_harlow Well, I found you from mstdn.io
@lukask look at that handsome photo!!
@cm_harlow Search seems to have a 50% hit/miss window for me. But if I google search a known username and the word mastodon I seem to be good at finding them. ... this is a utility I'd like to see improved.
