Though the best thing about $employer's WWIV BBS was a secret door program that patched you through to the Sequent box in the basement. Dual 386's, size of a refrigerator, caused bitter Dynix (BSD) vs. Dynix/ptx (SVR4) flame wars around the office.
So maybe Mastodon needs some dumb ASCII BBS games to add to the whole 90s vibe, like maybe Trade Wars or Food Fight.
I was mostly on WWIVnet back then Mostly 'cos workplace had a WWIV BBS, plus I could never get into FidoNet's real names policy.

I kind of like the "Mastodon = networked 1990 BBS" analogy. Though I'm drawing a complete blank on what I used to talk about back then. IIRC it was mostly the latest TNG episode, bad ASCII art, and a lot of yelling about the first Iraq war.
