Some important rules when considering adding ML to your app:
1. Start building without machine learning
2. Continue without machine learning
3. Be blissfully unaware of concept drift, model versioning, AUC, and feature engineering
4. Turn off the computer
5. Go outside and buy a small child an ice cream cone
6. Sit with your beloved under the stars and, wonder at the vastness of the universe and your small role in it
7. Turn the computer back on, you’re now ready to add only linear regression

@anildash Thanks for this! It inspired me to switch from LinkTree. Didn't take long at all to set up something way better. links.nowwearealltom.com

I of course always want to be elevating the conversation about media and information ecosystems, but also I’ve been waiting for an excuse for this fit.

the idea that i need to track news updates like i'm watching a horserace is probably totally bullshit and for all of other people is probably totally bullshit.

twitter's transformation into a fully fledged hate platform is almost complete & the excuse i've told myself -- that i need to be there for "news" or whatever -- is starting to wear real thin.

September 1997, Wired Magazine covers #Hotline - an Internet based BBS program with a tracker to create a federation of servers.

Virtually every server allowed guest access and admins on the smaller ones would often greet you as you logged on

Today is the 35th anniversary of the Max Headroom signal broadcast intrusion.

1st incident lasted 25s during the sportscast on the 9PM news on WGN-TV; The 2nd, 2hrs later, lasted ~90s on PBS affiliate WTTW during Dr. Who.

One of the things that OG Black Mastodon users have complained about for years, is the resistance to merging a PR that would allow admins to easily opt-in to a global denylist of known, cynical instances.

The usual questions of "But who defines what a Nazi is?" come up, so nothing gets done. So each new admin is responsible for independently finding and keeping up with known, intentionally harmful instances.

There's A LOT of discussion about content moderation right now and very little of it touches on the fact that we've all lived on the big social sites for the last decade-plus thanks to the massively exploitated labor of mostly-invisible moderation workers. The social web at scale wouldn't have happened without these laborers, who in addition to shit wages, have been exposed to literally every imaginable horror.

If we're remaking this world, let's do better on that front.

From July 2011,

@anildash's wise counsel :

"You should make a budget that supports having a good community,

... Every single person who’s going to object to these ideas is going to talk about how they can’t afford to hire a community manager,

Or how it’s so expensive to develop good tools for managing comments.

Okay,

Then save money by turning off your web server.

Or enjoy your city where you presumably don’t want to pay for police because they’re so expensive."

In theory, federation gives us a way to escape silicon valley's vicious capitalist cycles of expansion, decline, obliteration, and rebirth; by letting users truly own their data and walk away with it to someplace new if they want to or need to, preserving identity continuity across the ever-shifting landscape of the free web as they see fit.

Social media, especially character-limit-focused social media like twitter and (vanilla) mastodon, has a reputation for being ephemeral. Peoples' estimation of its value, especially its value as an archive or historical record, or anything you'd want to hang onto for any reason, is low. And yet! As twitter crumbles we are realizing just how much of value will be lost if its archive goes away forever. To a great extent, history is simply the ephemeral in large enough aggregate.
