I've seen a number of threads, blog posts, essays, etc., discussing the implications of Large Language Models such as the ChatGPT implementation of GPT3.5.

The worry is that these systems do a decent job at writing answers to fairly specific prompts, in that they bring together multiple elements to form a question. I've included an example below. If I asked a question like this on an exam, I'd give an answer like this full marks.

I really like the favorite/boost/bookmark distinctions. I also like the fact that here you have to go back to the original post to talk--my brain says lovechild of Twitter and Pillowfort. Also, accountability, woohoo!

So. In my view.

Favorite: HEY YOU this was a COOL THING.

Boost: HEY EVERYONE this was a COOL THING.

Bookmark: HEY ME don't forget about this COOL THING.

Reply: OMG WHAT A COOL THING can we TALK about it?

Hello Mastodon! It's us, the freeform station of the nation, #WFMU!

WFMU is an independent listener-supported, non-commercial #radio station broadcasting on-air and online from downtown Jersey City, NJ, USA, right across the Hudson from lower Manhattan. We also have three web-only streams.

All of our #music and #talk programming is controlled by individual DJs and hosts, and is not beholden to any type of station-wide playlist or rotation schedule. We don't belong to any public radio network, and close to 100% of our programming originates at the station.

We're just starting to get settled in here, so please bear with us! For now we'll be sharing periodic updates on programming and other station events and info.

Check the accounts we're following to find WFMU DJs and hosts on Mastodon. For now @efd is the puppetmaster of this account.

#COVID detected in #PaloAlto #BayArea wastewater is now higher than at any previous point during the pandemic.

In the courses I teach, writing is vital element. Here is how ChatGPT handled one of the assignments I make. I would have given this a good grade. Academia has some very serious issues to confront:

Bivalent Covid vaccine uptake has been really slow in the U.S. Only 13% of eligible people — just under 40M people — have received the shot. In people 65 and older, only a third have taken the booster. covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-track

My team at work just launched new research on the #TwitterMigration: We analyze which platforms are growing - especially #Mastodon, #Tumblr & #Post.

We look at which sites users are adding to their Twitter bios, posting to their friends about & downloading apps for.

Please do boost this, and love to hear any comments or feedback on it!

From "Reflections" at Yale Divinity School: "Despite our much-vaunted biblical literacy, however, we in the theological realm are poor prophets like everyone else, except when we resort to the old game of self-fulfilling prophecy. It is easy to predict what you ensure will happen. " reflections.yale.edu/article/a

Time to share this on Mastodon! Please boost widely 🙏🏼

Part 1 of 2: Prayer to St. Barbara

St Barbara, you are stronger than the tower of a fortress and the fury of hurricanes. Do not let lightning hit me, thunder frighten me or the roar of canons jolt my courage or bravery. Stay always by my side so that I may confront all the storms and battles of my life with my head held high and a serene countenance. [...]

Scooby Doo: How do you square this then eh? All the criminals we catch are old white men and yet our jails are filled predominantly with black and hispanic male prisoners. Why aren't the old white amusement park owners getting jail sentences?

Daphne: Oh Scooby, don't bring this whole thing up again.

Velma: Better lawyers?

SD: Oh shut up Velma and eat your fucking hummus.

Fred: Come on guys, don't be like this. It's Christmas.

Shaggy: I just wanted a nice dinner with all of us together...

Mastodon which is incredibly hot, supports RSS beautifully.

Just add .rss to any account to get the feed. Amazing!

Open that in your favorite feed reader. It’ll work.

Post a screenshot, say what the reader app is.

And pass this on to everyone who uses a feed reader.

Spread the word!

This is a huge deal for the open web.

#ChatGPT is impressive but uninspiring. Yes, it possesses a facility for filling a page with text its creators stole from human authors. But it is, by definition, unoriginal and lacking in thought or creativity; a parlor trick, with dead eyes.

Anyone who has experienced “Eliza” or Markov chain text generation (both have been around for ~50 years) sees that this is but a very very good implementation. But it is rooted in theft of human creative effort; an avatar of today’s Silicon Valley.

Great article by Eve Fairbanks from Wired about what will be lost with the demise of Twitter.

But also an explanation for why the SIZE of a network effect isn't as important as WHO uses the network effect.

Twitter was never about how many people used it—Facebook always had more users.

For better or worse, Twitter defined what was important in the public square—even as it never should have since it was owned by publicly traded corporation.

Good quote in screenshot.

What we’re seeing with Kanye West and Nick Fuentes is the beginnings of what could become a multi-racial Christianist coalition organized around antisemitism.

While we might want to dismiss what we’re seeing as “crazy,” I suggest we take it seriously and monitor it closely.

As we saw with Trumpism, people—by which I mean human beings regardless of political views—are drawn to spectacle.

What’s happening is very, very dangerous.
