Look, AI essays are cool and all, but I'm not seeing them using in-text citation. So, this is more of a threat to columnists than it is to academics.

If you require your students to cite things, I'm not seeing the freak out examples generate things that will let your students cheat. Make your tests open book, require citation, cheating concern issues solved.

I definitely get less engagement here on posts than I did on Twitter, and that has definitely been something I have had to unlearn - the dopamine hit from RTS and responses is powerful for my monkey brain.

Mastodon tip:
If you are using the advanced view of Mastodon on your computer, you can have multiple columns with their own feeds, for example Home, Notifications, Local, etc. You can also have a column just for a hashtag--or, and this is kind of magical bc the bird site couldn't do this--multiple related hashtags.

So, if you want to make sure you capture posts tagged #histodon AND #histodons, you can do that! Here's the screenshot of adding an additional tag.

For instructions on adding a column with a hashtag, see youtube.com/watch?v=QCRb4qEbUP

Also excited for the new era of "who is liable when the AI tells you to cook the frozen Turkey in the deep-fryer" / "can you maliciously interact as user A with the AI, such that the AI interacts with user B and advises them to do X" wars

I think mono black is pretty op at the moment

Fellow academics:

Strongly consider changing your syllabi now, and designing assignments that can't be fulfilled by #AI chatbots. Even better, consider only assigning work that students will actually be excited to do themselves (for instance, autobiographical essays).

I just got OpenAI to write a better essay on #minstrelsy & US #popmusic than most of my UG students could muster, in about 1 second.

What are folks using as raspberry pi alternatives these days that are actually purchasable, similarly priced, and not using allwinner chips?

@potatogunkelly @pluralistic @potatogunkelly @pluralistic Absolutely excellent observation. For me it very much starts with the instance I moved to since I jumped back on recently and the Local interactions. Even the relatively few people I'm following so far (growing slowly and deliberately) in my Home feed give me things to to think about and follow on my own both more often and more profitably than Twitter ever did.

This juxtaposition of images by @atoponce describes it for me quite well.

Mastodon which is incredibly hot, supports RSS beautifully.

Just add .rss to any account to get the feed. Amazing!

Open that in your favorite feed reader. It’ll work.

Post a screenshot, say what the reader app is.

And pass this on to everyone who uses a feed reader.

Spread the word!

This is a huge deal for the open web.

Happy Birthday Jerry Lawson!

Jerry invented arguably one of the most important components to modern home console gaming. Modular software (cartridges). His work would help build the FairChild F, the first modular cartridge console. He was a chief engineer for the company. This predates the 2600!

Without Jerry’s invention the gaming world would not have been the same today! Thank you Jerry!

Question for more experiences Mastodon folks: I've chatted w/ a few folks about sports fandom here. Some (e.g. a WNBA team owner) are considering leaving birdchan for safety and values issues, but don't know what awaits them here. I can advise on a near-term plan (just find a server and come on over), but is there a future (or present?) of sports communication and fandom on Mastodon that I can point them towards? Or something we/they could build here?

"Corecore"? I have officially lost all touch with youth culture. nobells.blog/corecore/

Dear Mastodon,

My publisher is planning to release its whole catalog of books (SF&fantasy novels written in French) under a free license (Art Libre or CC).

We are looking for partners interested in helping with the FR->EN translation and, most importantly, with the distribution in the North American & English market.

So we are looking for professionals of the publishing industry willing to spread free-as-in-speek culture.

Thanks for sharing/retoot
