"The traditional image of her as a remarkable yet human leader, throwing her yard long breasts over her shoulders when going into battle astride an elephant, has been handed down from generation to generation."

-- Keith Taylor on the legendary Bà Triệu

I can't imagine anyone living in today would find its long history of remarkable women surprising. Vietnamese women don't mess around. They get shit done. You learn that quickly or end up wishing you had.

@conradcole There's a ferocity in women that Western ones just don't have. Having said that, I also think there's a passion here that's lacking in the West. However, it sounds like women are a little more intense than their sisters.

@SlowRain I found women to be the most self-contained and independent women I met. Not as driven as many Vietnamese women, but so comfortable in their own skin compared to those I knew in Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam. I appreciated how capable and chill they could be.

Vietnam feels like an intensely patriarchal society run by women. Men have the high profile positions, but so often I find I can't get much done with a company until I meet the right women there. The rest is show.

@conradcole I have no reference point for Vietnamese, Japanese, or Korean women. Most foreigners here can relate to the tempers of Taiwanese (& Chinese) women. "Psycho" is the word most would use. Taiwanese men may have higher salaries & better jobs, but everyone knows not to piss off the wife/girlfriend. I wouldn't call them independent in the same way as Western women, though. They need a man, they just know how to make him do what they want.
