To be clear, I think this is a good thing. I value all this exposure to other languages and mindsets.
Mastodom reminds me a bit of my job at the moment. I have a lot of colleagues for whom English is a second language and I see a lot of words getting substituted and grammar getting muddled.
On Mastodon I see people posting in all sorts of languages, in contrast to other networks where I'm surrounded by English almost all of the time!
Mastodon.cloud data retention (rules vary, check your local) The duration for disaggregated unencrypted IPs strikes me as ... long. It's a case where Google policy might well be preferable.
What is your data retention policy?
We will make a good faith effort to:
Retain server logs containing the IP address of all requests to this server no more than 90 days.
Retain the IP addresses associated with registered users and their posts no more than 5 years.
@imchrisandrews I quite agree. We have similar problems in the UK, although no one does defense spending quite like the USA!
@JAS I'm trying Tooty Fruity at the moment. It recognised mastodon.cloud just fine.
I joined #mastodon on my lunch break, which has now sadly elapsed. I'll be back a bit later! Or when the boss isn't around...
@imchrisandrews None of my techie friends are on here yet, never mind the non-techie ones! It's a little bit liberating, honestly. Like Twitter was in the early days, almost everyone I see is a stranger.
@maureenjohnson Let's! part of me wants it to succeed just because the principles and ideas agree with me.
@wilw I'd like that. It's the only supposed Twitter replacement I've bothered with so far.

Recently, the handling of online defamation has become a hot topic on many mass media as well as social media channels. News Article for Reference: https://www.jiji.com/sp/article?k=2020052500387 In response to these reports, it is expected that lawsuits and disclosure requests will become more publicly known; and government agencies will order stricter enforcement in addition to tightening regulations. However, under the current state of Japan, we will not be able to handle the increase of such administrative burdens and will have trouble dealing with it appropriately. Thus, we have decided to stop providing our service on mstdn.jp and mastodon.cloud starting June 30, 2020. We are very sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding on the matter.
