It's remarkable the degree to which the Popular  Mechanics piece on #Mastodon misses the point.

Brand confusion/name squatting can be serious problems--IF you're using the platform as a serious marketing tool.

Most of us are here precisely because we were sick of being on a platform that was a serious marketing tool. So maybe the lack of professional tools to promote and protect your brand are mostly a feature (and I say that as an IP lawyer who kinda takes brands seriously).

do you like music? are your ears free for an hour or so? youtube.com/watch?v=4KrvQYqyde

i gotta mute all these french speakers. nothing personal, i just can't be bothered to dig through it

mildly disconcerted by the number of people around these parts that legitimately believe they are capable of magic and / or witchcraft. i mean you do you and if it's a spirituality thing that's cool and all but if you can cast spells and shit you should probably go on tour

I'm seeing some feminism here that's all about hating men, and I get it

But the problem of men's education about people other themselves is multi-faceted, and it can't only be laid at the feet of all men

Men need to work on it, but men and women both need to get on the same wavelength and start with early education and empathy.

Tons of women voted for me, and getting that demographic to turn around would go a long way to fix issues with men, too

RSS feeds are cool and all but i was really enjoying the absence of brands on the platform

can we all agree to shut that shit down if actual brands try to start official accounts? i really don't want this to be another advertising platform.

there are a few things i think mastodon is missing the mark on:

1. poor use of screen real estate. the home timeline should be bigger. there shouldn't be a giant blank space under the toot button.

2. where are the trending hashtags / topics? without these there is no way to really engage with what's going on in any meaningful way. trying to keep up with local and federated timelines is throwing darts blindfolded.

@realDonaldTrump stop this i can't smoke for like six more hours

hey what's this thing, is it just furries referencing zootopia?

This dark theme by default is a game changer though.

I never really used Twitter to connect with friends much, just to keep up with public personalities / news, so in my case this doesn't even fill the same role as Twitter. Nonetheless, I'm intrigued.

I dunno anyone or anything on this platform yet, so tooting pretty much feels like yelling into the void.

FOSS social media is pretty cool in theory. Now to find out what it looks like in practice.
