@starkatt not an experiment, per se, but the report from NASA today that human VLF communication is actually pushing the Van Allen belts farther away.
@maloki (3) Instead of selling it as "a federated social network" (too vague & complex for most people), I would like to call #Mastodon as "the social network that doesn't go away by a company's whim" or "the social network as resilient as a real human language" or "the network that is governed by its users". You know, *benefits* of federation instead of the name "federated" itself.
[Draft] Proposed rules of thumb for content warning usage:
Take it upon yourself to use them in proportion to your privilege (more CWs with more privilege).
Don't expect others to use them out of proportion to their own privilege (marginalized people didn't ask to have their daily lives disproportionately politicized).
Err on the side of caution since people can't unsee triggering content.
Always CW spoilers (that's just polite).
These are personal rules, not community rules.
@stolas We've co-created a good illustration of how UI/UX isn't just a convenience issue but also a political one.
Marginalized groups (particularly women and older people) are assumed tech-illiterate by default: More intuitive interfaces reduce the very real man-splaining burden inflicted on them while also reducing the strength of the frequency illusion that otherwise reinforces such negative stereotypes.
Please help me spread this message.
A friend of mine has been diagnosed with scleroderma and is asking to spread a gofund.me campaign to raise some money for her treatment. If you are willing to support her, please visit https://www.gofundme.com/por-una-vida-sana-para-carol and donate.
Boosting this toot will be highly appreciated!
liberal feminism (feminism without class consciousness) has become the favourite method of corporations to appear empathetic and counter-culture without actually challenging the underlying structures that oppress the most vulnerable women, it's amazing to watch so much noise and money come from it that amounts to absolutely nothing
late stage capitalism
A boss once told me straight up to my face that he was deliberately working me 29 hours a week so he could have a full time employee without having to get my benefits.
And wouldn't you know it, those hours were so erratic, I couldn't go look for another job. Retail and the service industry DOES THIS DELIBERATELY. They want to work you to death, pass the "cost of living" on to the worker, and make it so that you cannot possibly get ahead for fear of somebody else owning their "human resource".
The revolution cannot come fast enough, comrades.
It's a black day for #russian internets: a bill draft was proposed by Russian government that bans usage of #VPN, #Tor, and other anonymizers. This happened only 10 days after a Tor exit node administrator #DmitryBogatov was arrested. Being anonymous is now a crime in Russia... #freeBogatov https://rublacklist.net/27859/

Yes even you! If it's Twine or Unreal or rolling it all from scratch. They're all as valid as each other and the barrier to entry is getting ever lower.
I'm so excited by the upcoming release of RPG Maker Fes. Suddenly every 3DS owner will have a game making suite in their pocket available to buy. And even better - everyone gets access to the player for free! That rules!
A student at my university is missing. He was in a small (20 student) year-long class I led two years ago, so I knew him well but haven't talked to him since it ended in 2015.
I know there aren't many people here from Vancouver, BC, but he sometimes went to Seattle too. We're widening the search beyond the local area.
Happy D'ni New Year, #Mystodon! The original Myst HyperCard stack was created 26 years ago today. 🎉
A good portion of artist income goes to other artists. About 20% of my Patreon take goes out to other Patreons. If you like anything that anyone makes, pay them.
I don't mean a symbolic amount. I mean, see how much you can afford and not endanger your life. Very often, artists ARE endangering their lives. But our society doesn't value what we can do.
The new Samsung Smart TV. You'll be shocked at how smart it is. You'll be surprised when it shows up at your office and takes over your job. You'll find your wife sitting cross-legged on the living room floor, talking to it like you haven't talked to each other in years. Your children will not love it more than they love you; how could they? But they'll look up to it. And you will know that they never looked up to you at all.
@JoshuaACNewman I've given up trying to read either of those feeds. Instead, I'm searching for people who post about topics that interest me and trying to populate my home stream with that approach.
