Mastodon political etiquette proposal

It is the proper etiquette to mark CW's with + if positive message or - if negative message. When it comes to politics what is positive or negative depends on your political viewpoint.

I suggest we use:

<+ meaning positive from a left wing viewpoint
+> positive from a right wing viewpoint

@InternetKevin hmm, interesting proposal! I kind of agree, but I am also not a supporter of filter bubbles. A democracy can only work if people discuss with people who they disagree with.
However, it seems to have become a problem that people create their own bubbles (closed FB groups, hashtags, forums, etc.) where they only discuss with people of the same opinion, and are rarely exposed to opposing arguments.

@InternetKevin (cont.) so because of that, I think maybe a CW for right/left wing toots should maybe be avoided (I might be wrong though 😅).

Either way, I am not a big fan of the right/left wing classification. For example, I guess fighting climate change is a left wing topic? That is not always the case though, except in USA maybe, where the left-right split is more obvious (because of their two party system).

@matiaslavik I don't know if it would create any new filter bubbles. With the present system, folks are given the impression a post is safe to open and representing good news, then they read something celebrating something that goes completely against their values. That is more offensive than if there was no CW there or no +/- there.

People don't do it thinking it will offend anyone because they are writing from their own perspectives.

@matiaslavik I would read posts from either left, center or right perspective.

Mastodon political etiquette proposal

@InternetKevin well, that's a good point actually!
And I would also read left, centre and right posts. However, there are plenty of people who would not, but I guess these people block/unfollow people who they disagree with anyway 😅

Mastodon political etiquette proposal

@matiaslavik yes exactly. Individuals will always decide for themselves who to follow/unfollow/block.

It is just an idea to reduce the frequency of nasty surprises for people with differing views, and remind everyone that there are always different perspectives.
