1) Hands up if you’re already anxious about meeting all the other attendees who’re actually doing stuff / have actually accomplished things - I am

2) now is about as good a time as any to repeat this mantra/affirmation: ❤️ I am good enough, I will always be good enough, I am more than my accomplishments ❤️

(In last experience you don’t have to believe it for it to helpful)

Pass this on if you think this’ll help etc

Example: last xoxo, I got hit so hard by anxiety and shame that I hardly went to *anything* - didn’t go to any sessions, any socials, anything.

And then I went and made myself feel *worse* by beating myself up about the money I’d wasted.

In retrospect that wasn’t a particularly compassionate attitude to take toward myself.

@Danhon ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon Hi, I could have written this word for word! This is a great reminder, thank you!

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon omg I thought I was the only one who did this, def. hidden in my hotel room for portions of conferences and then felt bad about it.

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Matt last XOXO, I went to, like, *two* mainstage talks.

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon I went to two at HOPE too (the one before last, not the last).

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon oh darling fella xxx

You know people know that you are kind and friendly and nice, as well as a sayer of smart things and a do-er of good things, and that's why they would all be super happy to talk to you *any* time but particularly at a conference xxx

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon I feel so similar. I definitely did not go to the socials because I have complete panic going into them. I did sit in on the conference sessions; I have an easier time tackling that because it's mostly just "find a seat and keep to myself".

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon FWIW, this is pretty much along the lines of why I've never talked myself into even going to XOXO although I rationally think it could be a grand time

@lmorchard

I’m pretty sure speaking at my first o’reilly Conference directly contributed to a hospitalized breakdown (more precisely, ~6 wks of daily weekday, 9-4 out-patient treatment)

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon oof, yow

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon I've done this at conferences I've been excited to go to and it's helpful to see people whose work I admire do the same. ❤️

@Danhon Just so you know, you are one of those people I feel that way about at XOXO. :)

turns out most of the time many of us/most of us/all of us are humans doing humaning and turns out that is just a giant ball of internal stress and anxiety

@matthewbogart

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon Same.

Thanks.

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon A related thing I am reminding myself of: there is time, there is a lot of time beyond this, there is not only one chance for making friends or learning things, I don’t need to try to optimize everything.

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon *raises hands*

Also having FOMO on competing events at Social and there are SO MANY people I want to hang out with and I should make a list and I won't have the time and eugh

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon for me, there's a huge difference anticipating seeing people and actually talking with people.

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon You are good enough, you will always be good enough, you are more than my accomplishments, and I'm looking forward to meeting you at XOXO.

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon Dan, you are super awesome. (But yes, I have those feels. I’ve been working on making the same one thing since the first xoxo)

mental health @ xoxo festival

@Danhon it was a high point of my last xoxo to meet you in person and say hello. I found the whole event was basically interacting with various facets of imposter syndrome
