to clear the confusion:
Mastodon has "direct posts." Thess are posts only visible to mentioned users. they do federate. they are delivered to any user on any instance who is mentioned. if that instance is not Mastodon it just becomes a regular post on their end.
GNU Social has "direct messages." These do not federate and can only be exchanged to local users.
