...also, Mastodon is encouraging me to do things that I already wanted to do:
* learn languages (French, Spanish, Danish, Gaelic)
* brush up on my CSS & JavaScript skills
* learn languages (Angular, Ruby)
It has encouraged me to write introspective posts. It has made me laugh out loud at the sheer cleverness of others. It has been a safe space to show up as 100% me, non-curated: just me.
So I see a lot of hand wringing about "being on the right instance" because apparently "topics matter" and "we don't want to be like Twitter".
First: fuck your reductionist bullshit.
Second: fuck your exclusionary bullshit.
We lost something when the internet displaced libraries. We lost browsing aisles and finding shit we didn't know we wanted.
Now that I've distanced myself from the dev team, here's the elephant in the room. Mastodon. Whatever.
We seeded from Hacker News and ads pointed at Infosec Twitter and Pixiv and we got gay furry trans anarcho-communist tech nerd weeaboos. And Japan. Great. Cool. I'm not all of those things but that's my "tribe."
But so far our "inclusivity" has just been patting ourselves on the back for including each other. People who don't match those descriptors show up and leave.
Are we gonna fix that?
