It's beautiful and funny and uplifting, sure, but what really makes it is that I saw it with my mom and sister, and then my mom got it for us on video. For a few years Mom and I would get the yen to watch it, so we'd escape our lives for a couple of hours and then would call each other to report that we'd seen it again. It became a way for us to leave our separate dreary marriages and pretend we were in Italy.
