Serious question, can someone claim the same username on a different instance?
@AmelieRitter I _think_ so but I'm unsure.
@AmelieRitter I have
@AmelieRitter Haven't tested that out yet. But I tried making a username without my year of birth but the confirmation email failed to deliver.
@AmelieRitter I don't know... easy enough to try - let me know how it goes :)
@Ozzy Yup, you can!
@AmelieRitter ... well that's going to get confusing really really quickly - SAD!
@Ozzy Yeah, thought of that too. So you gotta have a really really unique UN to avoid dupes
@AmelieRitter and if you're repping a business - it's going to be a dumpster fire.
@AmelieRitter I might thing they can, couse this users names works kind like e-mail, has name-servername format, so actually if servername is different we asume is other user...
@AmelieRitter yeah, usernames are totally not unique between instances. only your (username)@(instance) is unique
@AmelieRitter yes. Your username is the full you@whatever.instance, the web interface just truncates it most of the time.
@pete @AmelieRitter that's a recipe for grief
@AmelieRitter I believe, if I'm understanding the structure here correctly, that the instances all connect to one another and cross reference usernames. That way two instances can federate without database issues
@BajaMutt Now I'm having a headache. I need a break.
@AmelieRitter Sorry, I forget sometimes not everyone has a background in base computer systems :joy:
@AmelieRitter We could test it, go to a completely off-the-face-of-the-earth server, and put in your user when you sign up
@AmelieRitter Sure, if you're fast.
